Kyote Radio |Habitats |Self-release

Release Date February 13th, 2026
Format Vinyl/Digital
Genre Heavy Psych, Stoner/Doom Metal
Country United States

Kyote Radio comes from the deep deserts of New Mexico, originally taking shape in Austin back in 2013. Fronted by Micah Paredes on vocals and electric guitar, the group pulls in musicians like Nick Smith, Wesley Riddle, Russ Connell, Nick Blossom, and Ray Heilman to generate massive riffs and loud rhythm sections. They released their debut EP "Mouth Of The Cave" in 2018 and followed up with their first full-length "Real Crime" in 2021. Now operating out of Taos, they are returning with their second full-length album, "Habitats".

"Habitats" mixes desert rock, doom metal, and heavy psych, throwing in some modern indie rock elements along the way. The guitars get loud, and the bass rumbles hard on songs like "The Crown", featuring Kyle Shutt from The Sword. You get fuzzy solos and a thundering rhythm section driving the songs forward. It is a straightforward trip into desert rock territory, giving fans of the style plenty of fuzzed-out noise to absorb.

Honestly, an album like this leaves me a bit indifferent because the genre simply does not move me much. The collision of stoner rock with indie textures on tracks like "Between The Oceans" and "Shamans" is adequate, and the playing gets the job done. The fuzz pedals get a serious workout, and the vocals deliver what the music requires. The overall execution just rolls by my ears without really hooking me in or making me want to hit replay immediately.

The production handled by Frenchie Smith and Micah Paredes keeps the instruments loud and present. "Panorama" and "Fossilized" keep the desert rock flag flying high. As a metalhead looking for extreme aggression, this dusty garage rock sound is too laid back for my daily rotation. It works fine for background noise while driving down a hot highway, assuming you are super into this specific hybrid of sounds. Otherwise, it just exists as an average addition to their catalog.

Score: 6.5
