Nightingale | The Closing Chronicles | InsideOut (Re-Release)

Release Date: August 8, 2025
Format: LP/CD
Genre: Progressive Dark Rock
Country: Sweden

Nightingale was born in the mid nineties as the personal universe of Dan Swanö, a musician who had already carved a name in extreme metal with Edge Of Sanity & Bloodbath and later through work with Opeth and Katatonia. Nightingale moved in a different direction, rooted in dark rock with progressive touches and melodic storytelling. “The Closing Chronicles”, originally released in 1996, was the moment when Dan’s brother, Dag Swanö, stepped inside the project for good. The album expanded Nightingale’s early blueprint and soon became one of the band’s most beloved works. Almost three decades later, it returns remastered, sounding refreshed without losing its original character.

This new edition of “The Closing Chronicles” brings the album back to circulation with stronger definition and a warmer presence than the old version. The main disc holds the original songs, from “Deep Inside Of Nowhere” to the long journey of “Alive Again”. The writing still shows Dan Swanö at a point where he was combining melodic rock with dramatic storytelling, keeping things grounded while allowing emotion to run through the compositions. Dag Swanö’s guitar lines support this direction with a steady hand, giving the album a clear identity. The songs keep their theatrical tension, carried by Dan’s baritone voice and a melodic sensibility that was already well developed by 1996.

The second disc spreads across different periods. “The Childhood Chronicles” offers early sketches and ideas, giving listeners a window into the roots of the album’s concept. The 2025 versions of “Intermezzo” and “Alive Again” present updated interpretations with a more modern sound, handled carefully so the originals remain the backbone. The live tracks bring a raw and unfiltered charm, showing how Nightingale used these songs on stage with a tighter approach. The demos close everything with rough edges intact, reminding us how these ideas began before they took final shape.

This reissue doesn’t simply repackage old material. It reopens a chapter of Nightingale that many listeners have wanted to revisit for years, doing so with respect for the album’s original soul. “The Closing Chronicles” still carries that melancholic charm, a mix of rock storytelling and melodic richness that has aged gracefully. For longtime fans it is a welcome return, and for new listeners it serves as a clear introduction to a unique corner of Dan Swanö’s long career.

Phantoms Of Future | Forever Dark | Massacre Records

Release Date: 5 December 2025
Format: Album
Genre: Dark Rock, Gothic Rock
Country: Germany

Phantoms Of Future grew through the 90s with their smoky mix of rock, gothic atmosphere and electronic shimmer. They played hundreds of shows, shared stages with some heavy names and slipped into club charts with “SUN”. After a long silence, they step out again with “Forever Dark”. The familiar crew is intact, with Sir Hannes Smith leading vocals and lyrics, backed by Olaf Oebels, Peter Stein, Viva and Anselm Tripptrap. Their return has the same twilight edge that made them stand out decades ago.

“Forever Dark” presents a band that knows its terrain. The album uses electronics as glowing signals in the background, while guitars and vocals carve out the emotional frame. There is a steady nighttime electricity woven into these tracks, matching their long tradition of shadow heavy imagery. The production by Jörg Uken, together with Smith, keeps the sound clear and stable. The album holds a smooth pacing and moves through its thirteen tracks without drifting or dragging.

The band shapes stories about hunger, longing, city nights and stubborn hope. Songs like “Werewolf”, “Forever Dark” and “I Don’t Believe You” push ahead with a clear sense of direction, mixing melodic lines with darker textures. Vocals carry the storytelling with direct phrasing, and the electronics sit alongside the guitars without getting in the way. The rhythm section adds grounding, giving the songs a pulsing movement suited to their neon lit character. The atmosphere stays firm across the album, matching the visual design by Gee and LividDeath.

As a comeback album, “Forever Dark” works well. Phantoms Of Future holds on to their shadow rich identity and bring forward a sound that suits their legacy. It might not strike hard at every corner, still it keeps a steady voice. Fans of atmospheric gothic rock with electronic touches will find this album easy to follow and capable of pulling them back for another spin.

Score: 6.5

Year Of The Goat | Trivia Goddess | Napalm Records

Release Date: September 20, 2024
Format: CD, LP, Digital
Genre: Occult Rock, Dark Rock
Country: Sweden

Sweden has long been a fertile ground for occult-inspired heavy music, and Year Of The Goat has carved out their own path since their formation in Norrköping back in 2006. Their name has become synonymous with ritualistic melodies, soaring guitars and a theatrical presence that echoes the sinister charm of 60s and 70s dark rock. Their breakthrough came in 2012 with the critically acclaimed "Angels Necropolis", a debut that immediately positioned them as frontrunners in the occult rock movement. They followed this with "The Unspeakable" (2015) and the sprawling "Novis Orbis Terrarum Ordinis" (2019), albums that deepened their storytelling and layered musical landscapes.

Now, after six years, Year Of The Goat returns with their fourth full-length, "Trivia Goddess". The album breaks away once again from their ongoing trilogy, instead focusing on a concept steeped in women’s history, witch trials and the enduring power of the goddess figure. The band’s interest in the darker chapters of religion and human cruelty finds new depth here, turning tales of persecution into grand, melodic rituals.

"Trivia Goddess" offers nine tracks, clocking in at nearly an hour, that summon the aura of candlelit chambers, medieval fear and righteous rebellion. From the commanding opener "The Power Of Eve" to the haunting closer "The Witch Of The Woods", the band weaves together sprawling compositions with hooks that linger. "Alucarda" leans heavily into a 70s hard rock spirit, easily one of the most infectious songs of their career, while "Mét Agwe" stretches into epic territory with an almost cinematic quality. The title track itself is a hymn to Hekate, the goddess of witches, invoking grandeur and menace.

Musically, Year Of The Goat remains true to their roots in dark, melodic rock, guided by twin guitar harmonies, dramatic vocal interplay and steady, ritualistic drumming. There’s a richness in the arrangements, whether in the layered chants of "The Queen Of Zemargad" or the sinister atmosphere of "Crescent Moon". The production emphasizes their grand sound without sacrificing the organic warmth that has always been part of their identity.
The album is heavy, atmospheric, memorable in its melodic craft, and fully devoted to the arcane themes that have defined their work. It feels like a timeless ritual, crafted for those who walk the path of occult rock.
