Sardonic emerged from Passau in 2022, carrying with them
a sound rooted in the darkness of death and black metal, but sharpened with
modern aggression. With their debut album “Menschenfeind”, the four-piece
delivers a German-language assault that mirrors the ugliest sides of human
nature. War, bloodlust, torture, addiction, necrophilia, suicide and hate, all
of it is poured into a half-hour of music that leaves no room for comfort.
Musically,
“Menschenfeind” is a direct strike. The guitar work from DaveVader churns out riff after riff, alternating
between crushing heaviness and faster bursts that bring an almost frantic
intensity. Leon’s bass gives weight to the
low-end, while Jimmy’s vocals roar through
the mix in harsh German phrasing, sounding as punishing as the themes they
describe. Behind it all, David Domega’s
drumming is recorded with precision and power, filling the songs with modern
punch while retaining an organic rawness.
This is an
album that thrives in extremity, not adorned with unnecessary technicality, and
it doesn’t seek to be grandiose. “Menschenfeind” is designed as a straight hit
of German death metal, soaked in misanthropy and violence, and that is exactly
what it delivers. Sardonic has set
themselves up strongly here, crafting a record that speaks directly to those
who want their death metal cold, hostile, and merciless.
Score: 7.5
