Formed in 1990, Christ
Agony is one of the most respected names in Polish black metal, led by
the ever-resilient Cezary "Cezar"
Augustynowicz. Over three decades, the band has built a reputation for
merging crushing heaviness with ritualistic atmosphere, delivering influential
albums such as “Unholyunion”, “Daemoonseth Act II”, and “Moonlight”.
After nine
years of silence, Christ Agony returns with
their ninth studio album, “Anthems”. Running just under 46 minutes, the album
carries the signature traits that defined the band from the beginning—ominous
guitars, ritualistic rhythms, and Cezar’s distinctive
voice—while adding refined layers that emphasize maturity and intent.
From the brooding force of “Empire Of Twilight” to the ritual-like textures of “Rites Of The Black Sun”, the album unfolds with substance, cohesion, and a vision rooted in experience. The occasional use of acoustic elements, chants, and even didgeridoo textures adds depth without distracting from the overall darkness.
“Anthems” reflects
the maturity of an artist who has experienced both the heights and abysses of a
long career. The music is fierce, immersive, and purposeful, channeling the
weight of tradition while reinforcing Christ Agony’s relevance today. This
album affirms that the band remains a vital force, capable of summoning the
same darkness and atmosphere that made them pioneers more than three decades
ago.
