Gjendød formed in Trondheim in 2015 and quickly carved out their place among the newer generation of Norwegian black metal. With each release, they have pushed their expression into harsher, darker, and more personal terrain, combining a raw traditional framework with their own vision of despair and folklore. Now, as a three-piece, they present their sixth full-length, “Svekkelse.”
This album
continues directly from “Livskramper,” but its intensity and scope are
immediately more striking. Across eight tracks, Gjendød
move through different extremes of black metal: sudden blasts of chaos,
passages weighed down in doom, and moments where the music feels like it
collapses inward with suffocating hopelessness. The longer songs, such as “En
Staur I Hjertet” and “Den Falske Råte,” stretch into bleak narratives, while
shorter cuts strike with sharpened immediacy. The variation between primitive
ferocity and intricate arrangements gives the album a sense of constant unrest,
always pushing forward yet never settling into comfort.
The sound from Nordstern Studios adds another dimension to the album’s weight. The production is heavy and punishing, emphasizing the sheer force of the riffs while allowing the atmosphere to remain thick and oppressive. Lyrically, Gjendød dive deep into Norwegian lore and lived experiences, giving their work a cultural and personal anchor. That combination of local identity and universal despair creates an album that feels both rooted and timeless.
With
“Svekkelse,” Gjendød have forged a piece of
black metal that is varied, intense, and uncompromising. It is an album that
captures both the cold grandeur of the genre’s tradition and the immediacy of
the band’s own artistic voice.
