Founded in
2013 by Schizoid, Malauriu
emerged from the scorched, mystical landscapes of Sicily. Over the last decade,
the project has morphed from a pure black metal entity into a shifting beast
that drags dark ambient, ritual noise, and punk through the mud. With over
twenty releases under their belt, they’ve built a reputation for being
uncompromising, moving their base of operations to London while keeping their
souls firmly rooted in the occult traditions and Aleister
Crowley-haunted history of their homeland.
Let’s be real, the first thing you
notice about "The Third Nail" is that terrible cover. You’ve got a hooded penitent blasting a trumpet
like he’s summoning the apocalypse in a cactus patch. It’s weird, it’s garish,
and it stands out in a sea of boring, identical-looking black metal covers. It
perfectly sets the stage for the collision of the sacred and the profane that Malauriu obsesses over.
The songwriting leans heavily into
that Sicilian ritual horror vibe. It feels like being trapped in a
blood-stained procession where the lines between holiness and blasphemy are
blurred. The tracks are steeped in a sense of suffering and mystery, using the
body as a language of faith through sheer sonic aggression. When the band
decides to speed things up, it’s ferocious, but they never lose that
ritualistic atmosphere that makes "The Third Nail" more than just a
standard blast-beat marathon.
Ending the record with a GG Allin cover is a total middle finger to the
purists, and I love it. Bringing in legends like Dr.
Heathen Scum and Diego DoUrden for
"Abuse Myself, I Wanna Die" was a genius move. It injects a heavy
dose of punk rot into the final minutes, proving Malauriu
doesn't care about your "kvlt" rules. They play what they want, they
look how they want, and "The Third Nail" is a testament to staying
true to a primitive, ugly vision.
