Supreme
Act Of War is a
Canadian extreme metal project driven by Peter Wolvesblood,
who handles guitars, vocals, and bass. Session drummer Todd
Hansen provides the percussion for the new album “Divisions Of The
Night”. The music tackles modern conflict, political flashpoints, military
campaigns, and the media machine. Several guests join the assault, including
vocalists Yong Ho, Jason
Cotton, and Takahashi Harima. Additional
guitar work comes from Ef Six, and Marko Vukovic adds bass on the final track. The
production was done by Peter Wolvesblood, with
mixing and mastering handled by Colin Attlesey.
Supreme Act Of War brings pure
aggression to “Divisions Of The Night”. The guitars rip through fast tremolo
picking and heavy power chords, heavily inspired by bands like Bolt Thrower, Nile, and
Slayer. The riffing provides a harsh crunch,
while drums blast through the mix with a mechanical, punishing pace.
“Thunderbolt Razorback” acts as a literal tribute to Bolt
Thrower. The hostility of the music matches the anger found in the
lyrical themes regarding government responses and modern warfare.
Ending an extreme metal release
about modern warfare with a cover of Rush’s “Tom
Sawyer” is a weird choice. It abruptly breaks the intense hostility built up
prior. “Divisions Of The Night” supplies enough heavy riffs for a casual
listening session. It has raw aggression and some cool guest spots. The
momentum stumbles due to similar song structures. The album works as a decent
background assault.
Score: 6.5
