Mourniaty carries a long simmering story
behind its debut. The idea began in 2015, when Karulainen
started shaping early riffs and dark themes in private. Things stayed
quiet until life finally gave room for the project to grow in 2020. The spark
became a steady flame once Karulainen and Metällinen discovered a family connection, a
detail that pushed them to turn loose plans into a serious creative bond. With Tenho joining on bass in 2022, Mourniaty stepped out of the studio shadow and
became a functioning three instrument line up with a clear direction. Their
material blends black metal aggression with mid tempo heaviness, alongside
Finnish and English lyrics rooted in Pagan and Anti Christian ideas. “Musta
Maa” arrives through Inverse Records as
their first full length, a dark companion for the cold season.
“Musta Maa”
moves with steady fire, leaning on weighty riffs, harsh vocals and a cold
melodic touch that reflects the Finnish background of the band. The mid tempo
approach gives the songs a marching heaviness, strong enough to keep attention
without slipping into monotony. There is a raw edge at the core of the music
that keeps the album grounded in traditional black metal, although the band
lets in atmospheric elements that give extra color to the sound.
“Musta Maa”
does not rely on chaotic bursts. It moves with controlled force, pushing its
themes with energy. Finnish lyrics add a strong character to the album, and the
English tracks give variation without breaking the overall spirit. There is a direction
across the material, not through dramatic shifts, but through the band’s
confidence in its chosen approach.
The result
is an album that delivers black metal with raw force, atmosphere and a
consistent dark tone. Mourniaty enters the
scene with assurance, showing that their long preparation has shaped something
firm and memorable. This does not read as a tentative first step. It sounds
like a band that arrives fully formed, ready to grow further.
Score: 7.5
