War Grave burst out of the UK heavy metal
scene like a thunderclap. Formed by vocalist Roman
Kantoch and guitarist Stuart Layne,
the band quickly earned attention with their 2024 self-titled EP, proving they
had the firepower and songwriting talent to stand shoulder to shoulder with the
classic metal greats. Drawing influence from Iron
Maiden, Judas Priest and Helloween, they channel the essence of traditional
heavy metal while keeping the energy raw and youthful. “Free Will,” their first
full-length album, confirms that their early promise was no accident.
“Free Will”
opens with “The Foreshadowing,” a brief atmospheric introduction that leads
into the storming title track, and from that moment the record bursts alive
with power and determination. The band sound tight and purposeful, balancing
melody and aggression with natural ease. The guitars slice through with twin
harmonies and solos that could have easily come from the golden era of metal,
while Kantoch’s vocals soar confidently over
the thunderous rhythm section. There’s a sense of triumph and momentum across
the album, with every song written to energize rather than simply impress.
The production, handled by Charlie Wilson Jnr. at Monolith Studios, gives “Free Will” a tight impact and rich, organic sound. Every instrument sounds alive, clear, and naturally powerful. The artwork by Heribertus M. Miftakhuddin adds an extra touch of character, matching the album’s epic spirit. War Grave sounds ready to step onto much larger stages. “Free Will” is a powerful and striking debut that shows a band ready to carry the British metal flame forward with heart and soul. It’s traditional heavy metal played with enthusiasm, skill, and total belief in its intent.
