From the birthplace of Lovecraft’s
cosmic dread comes Destruction Ritual, a
collaboration between French and American musicians who clearly share the same
hunger for sonic punishment. The project was founded by MkM (Antaeus, ex-Aosoth), TerrorReign (Necroblood), and Arafel,
joined by drummer Blastum, whose name has
been synonymous with chaos for years. Their first full-length, “Providence”, is
a descent into personal and spiritual corrosion told through six chapters of
violent, ritualistic black metal.
The album
moves like a feverish hallucination, each track built around savage riffs,
piercing melodies, and sudden eruptions of intensity. There’s a strong sense of
structure beneath the chaos. Violent surges are followed by moments of eerie
restraint, while the constant pulse of the drums keeps everything anchored in
aggression. MkM’s voice dominates the album
with its caustic tone, spitting venom over layers of sound that are ritualistic
and haunted. His delivery matches the theme perfectly, as if every line is a
wound opening again.
The
production keeps a raw character, suitable for the kind of black/death violence
the band aims for. The guitars slash and drone, forming twisted melodic lines
that pull the listener into a trance. Samples and soundscapes are used
sparingly but effectively, giving the impression of an underground mass
recorded in the ruins of an abandoned church. The tension between the psychotic
melody and pure aggression makes “Providence” an unsettling listen, one that
thrives on atmosphere without relying on gimmicks. As a debut,
it leaves a strong impression. There’s a genuine sense of direction and purpose
here, a balance between hostility and controlled ritual. Destruction Ritual has crafted an album that feels
lived-in and cursed, soaked in the spiritual decay that the title manifests.
