Formed in 2021, Vulnificus
has quickly carved their name into the brutal death metal underground
with three EPs that established them as a force steeped in chaos, sickness, and
uncompromising heaviness. Hailing from the United States, the band is fronted
by vocalist E. Browne, whose guttural
presence has been a defining feature of their sound, alongside M. Jones on bass, J.
Parker on guitar, and E. Daniele handling
drums and guitar duties. With their debut full-length “Inclination”, Vulnificus aims to present their most unhinged and
complete statement yet, expanding their plague-ridden vision of extreme music.
Clocking in
at just under forty minutes, “Inclination” is a relentless display of technical
brutal death metal pushed into feverish extremes. The album opens with “Bacterial
Backlash”, a track that immediately engulfs the listener in distorted riffing,
thick bass presence, and an oppressive atmosphere. The songwriting keeps a
balance between density and chaotic twists, creating a sense of being swallowed
whole by an organism far larger than oneself.
Three previously released tracks from the “Inextricable” EP make a return here, including “The Internecine Incarnation” in its vocal and instrumental form and “Intrinsic Inclination”, which slot seamlessly into the diseased architecture of the album. Rather than feeling like filler, these songs add familiarity while still being part of the greater descent into madness that the album embodies.
Elsewhere,
tracks like “Inexplicably Beguiled” stand out with riffs that tumble and churn
with near-organic chaos, while Browne’s
gutturals pour across the mix with suffocating intensity. “Excursus Vulnificus”,
one of the album’s longer compositions, revels in feverish aggression, breaking
into brief spasms of guitar frenzy before collapsing into a grotesque finale
that feels like the soundtrack to human ruin.
The production, handled by Scot Moriarty at Backroom Studios, amplifies the suffocating weight of the music. Every drum strike, riff, and bass run is sharpened into a soundscape that is merciless and overbearing. “Inclination” doesn’t give the listener space to breathe. It’s a compact descent into brutality where the riffs gnash, the vocals crawl through the cracks like vermin, and the drums drive everything forward with ruthless precision. Vulnificus has created an album that’s like an unbroken fever dream, filled with grotesque imagery and suffocating sonic violence.
