Hailing from Oulu in northern Finland, Trypanon have been steadily carving out their own dark corner in extreme music. Formed by members of Haapoja, Dart, and Renate/Cordate, the band first drew attention with their 2021 debut “Amentia,” an album that left a lasting impression with its suffocating weight and psychological intensity. Now, four years later, they return with “Through The Portal Of Flesh To Achieve Divinity,” released through Time To Kill Records.

This new work sees Trypanon expanding on the foundations of their earlier material, creating something even more harrowing and immersive. The album is built on a volatile mix of down-tuned sludge, chaotic death metal, and dissonant black metal, with occasional progressive touches and haunting melodic phrases buried beneath the violence. The overall sound is oppressive and brutal, yet at the same time strangely hypnotic, drawing the listener into a cycle of tension and release that feels ritualistic.

Across its 32 minutes, “Through The Portal Of Flesh To Achieve Divinity” unfolds like a fever dream. Tracks such as “Gnaw Out The Flesh To Free Yourself” and “Carriers Of The Chalice” summon an overwhelming storm of noise, where jagged riffs, cavernous vocals, and relentless drumming collide in a frenzy that feels both destructive and transformative. Shorter tracks like “Ruumis” and “Loss” act almost like broken fragments of vision, offering sharp bursts of intensity that reinforce the suffocating atmosphere.

Trypanon captures an energy that is raw, hostile, and consuming, and within the chaos there are glimpses of unsettling beauty. Dissonant chords open into passages that are strangely spiritual, as if the brutality itself is a form of transcendence. The production complements this approach perfectly. It’s not meant to be a comfortable listening. “Through The Portal Of Flesh To Achieve Divinity” is not an easy experience, but it is a deeply engaging one. Trypanon has taken their vision further into the abyss, creating an album that leaves a strong impression through its intensity and its uncompromising character.
