Tomas “Tompa” Lindberg (1972–2025) R.I.P.

 

The metal world lost one of its most recognizable voices on September 16th, 2025. Tomas Lindberg, frontman of At The Gates, passed away at the age of 52 after a battle with adenoid cystic carcinoma.

Born on October 16th, 1972, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Lindberg became one of the defining figures of the melodic death metal movement that grew from that city in the early 90s. His raw and piercing vocal delivery, combined with his intense stage presence, gave At The Gates a unique fire that influenced an entire generation of bands across the globe.

At The Gates’ 1995 album “Slaughter Of The Soul” is considered masterpiece of extreme metal. For many listeners it was an introduction to the Gothenburg sound, and it remains an album that shaped countless careers in the scene. Beyond At The Gates, Lindberg lent his voice to numerous other projects, from Disfear to The Crown, The Great Deceiver, Lock Up etc, proving his dedication to extreme music in every form it took.


Known for his uncompromising attitude and passion for underground culture, Lindberg was more than just a frontman. He was a lifer in metal, always pushing himself into new collaborations, always willing to stand on stage no matter how small or large the venue. Those who shared the stage with him often spoke of his boundless energy and his commitment to keeping extreme music alive and dangerous.

His passing marks the end of an era for Gothenburg death metal, and his presence will be missed on every stage he once commanded. Fans around the world mourn his loss, but the fire he lit in extreme music continues to burn through the countless bands he inspired.
