The Color Of Cyan emerged from San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a cinematic post-rock collective blending orchestral arrangements, ambient textures, and instrumental storytelling. Since their 2021 debut “Agape,” the band has consistently expanded the scope of their sound, combining swelling guitars, intricate strings, and dynamic percussion to craft immersive, emotive compositions. Their 2023 release “Egress” further refined this approach, exploring tension, reflection, and the vastness of human emotion through layered instrumentation.
“As Human” presents The
Color Of Cyan at the height of their compositional focus. The album
moves fluidly between expansive, soaring arrangements and intimate passages,
creating a sense of scale that never loses detail. Guitars rise and recede,
while strings provide counterpoints that elevate the emotional tension. Drums
and bass anchor each composition, giving weight to passages that might
otherwise drift, and subtle production choices highlight the interaction
between acoustic and electric elements.
The album’s pacing maintains engagement across its seven tracks. “Breathing” and “Hands Weaving Sky” offer moments of quiet reflection, contrasting with the weight and resonance of “As Human” and “Hail The Mountains.” “Oubao Moin” introduces a tension that unfolds gradually, guiding listeners through shifts in dynamics and atmosphere. The careful attention to sonic layering gives each track an immersive character, with textures that linger beyond the immediate listening experience.
Produced
and recorded across multiple studios, the album retains warmth and spatial
clarity. Greg Norman’s mixing and Bob Weston’s mastering enhance the natural depth
of the performances, ensuring that strings, keys, and percussion coexist
without clashing. Visually, the artwork by Eduardo
Cintron complements the music’s organic, expansive nature, reinforcing
the album’s thematic cohesion.
“As Human”
is an expansive instrumental journey. Its seamless combination of
orchestration, post-rock elements, and cinematic scope makes it accessible and rich,
offering moments of tension, release, and introspection. The album holds
attention from start to finish, presenting a complete, cohesive experience.
Score: 8.0
