In Memoriam: Guido “Atomic Steif” Richter (1967–2025)

With the heaviest of hearts, the metal community mourns the loss of Guido Richter—better known as Atomic Steif—who passed away on 31 August 2025 at the age of 57. The announcement came on 6 September 2025, shared by Sodom’s frontman Thomas “Angelripper” Such, who expressed sorrow and noted that the circumstances of his passing remain unknown.

A Legacy Forged in Thunderous Beats

Atomic Steif’s impact on the German thrash and speed metal scene was profound and far-reaching. Across decades, he lent his kinetic energy and rhythmic precision to numerous pivotal bands:

  • Violent Force (1984–1986, Velbert): Steif was a founding member and integral contributor to the band’s raw, vicious sound. Notable works include “Dead City” (demo) and the cult speed classic “Malevolent Assault Of Tomorrow”.
  • Living Death (1986–1989): With Steif on drums, the band pushed boundaries with the blistering “Protected From Reality” and ”Worlds Neuroses”, as well as the “Back To The Weapons” EP. Their music showcased technical ferocity and unrelenting energy.
  • Sacred Chao (1989): Formed with former Living Death members, this short-lived project produced a striking EP that remains a cult favorite.
  • Holy Moses (various periods): Steif contributed to the band’s thunderous return, infusing it with renewed aggression.
  • Assassin (2002–2004): Steif’s rhythmic backbone supported the band’s dynamic sound on “The Club” album.

Pulse of Sodom (1993–1995)

Steif’s tenure with Sodom cemented his legacy in the annals of thrash history. He joined as a replacement for Christian “Witchhunter” Dudek and contributed mightily to the band’s most ferocious era. His drumming powered:

  • The Aber Bitte Mit Sahne EP (1993)
  • Get What You Deserve (1994)
  • Marooned Live (1994)
  • Masquerade In Blood (1995)

Bandmate Andy Brings looked back fondly on their time together, recalling intense collaboration on studio albums and tours—including opening for iconic acts like Motörhead, Kreator, and Entombed. “He was in a class of his own, an incredible drummer!” Brings shared.

Remembering the Rhythm Master

Atomic Steif symbolized the relentless ferocity and precision that define thrash and speed metal. Whether in the studio or on stage, he brought visceral power and unwavering authenticity. To fans, peers, and newcomers alike, his drumming was a testament to the heart of the genre.

As we reflect on his life and legacy, we honor a true metal warrior—one whose beats will echo in our memories and on every record that he helped bring to life.

Rest in power, Atomic Steif.
