Autrest is the creation of Brazilian musician Matheus Vidor, who started the project in 2022 in
Rio Grande do Sul, a region marked by forests, hills and cold winters. He works
alone, writing, performing and recording everything, building music that
carries the landscapes of his home. His debut "Follow The Cold Path"
established him as a new voice in atmospheric black metal, and the new release
"Burning Embers, Forgotten Wolves" continues this path with more
warmth, layers and a sense of expansion. The mixing and mastering were done at Voidsea Studios, and the artwork comes from August Cappelen, reflecting the album’s
naturalistic themes.
The music
on this album stretches across different spaces with brief acoustic passages,
melodic black metal storms, wide atmospheric sections. There is a constant
balance between aggression and calm, each track moving like the natural world
it was inspired by, sometimes erupting, sometimes retreating into silence.
Guitars carry the core, weaving repetitive and meditative lines, while drums
push forward with steady force. Vocals are harsh and echoing, sitting low in
the mix, almost like another instrument rather than the leading voice.
Keyboards and ambient sounds add depth, painting images of fire, ash, ruins and
distant mountains.
Songs like "Ashes From The Burning Embers" and "Forgotten Wolves" hold the melodic backbone of the album, while shorter pieces such as "Lobos (Offering)" and "Where Stones Whisper" act as breathing spaces that prepare for the longer journeys. The closing track, "Chasm Of Time", is the most expansive, running close to nine minutes, and gathers many of the ideas presented earlier into a sweeping finale.
The lasting
impression of "Burning Embers, Forgotten Wolves" is how immersive it
becomes. The balance is steady, with layers unfolding at their own pace,
turning repetition into a kind of meditation and shaping melodies that sound
like echoes from somewhere half-remembered. For fans of bands such as SAOR, Elderwind or
Caladan Brood, this album will sound like a
natural companion, but Autrest brings its
own voice shaped by the Brazilian highlands.
