Axe Dragger formed when guitarist Bob Balch from Fu Manchu and ex-Pentagram drummer Pete Campbell started trading riffs across state lines. They recruited former Pantera singer Terry Glaze and Dark Funeral bassist Fredrik Isaksson to complete the lineup. The resulting self-titled debut album "Axe Dragger" brings these veteran musicians together to play pure, unadulterated heavy metal.

The guitars on "Axe Dragger" bring serious firepower and non-stop shredding. Balch trades his usual fuzz pedals for flying V squeals and aggressive harmonic minor scales. Campbell and Isaksson lock into a massive rhythm section, pounding out galloping beats and thunderous bass frequencies. Above the chaos, Glaze wails with absolute fury. Songs like "Fight Another Day" and "Shock 'Em Dead" deliver total headbanging fuel. The production rules entirely, giving the riffs a massive crunch and the drums a stadium-sized echo.

The execution kicks serious ass most of the time. The album delivers what true metalheads demand. Fast solos, soaring vocals, and relentless energy. Tracks such as "Iron Rider" and "Eat Me From The Inside" keep fists raised high. A couple of songs blend together in the middle of the tracklist. A few moments become predictable. The pacing dips slightly before roaring back to life for the finale.

"Axe Dragger" is a kickass debut from four seasoned road dogs playing loud heavy metal. The riffs rule, the solos melt faces, and the rhythm section destroys. Hearing these guys trade their usual doom or black metal sounds for straight-up denim and leather thunder totally works. Play this one at maximum volume.

Score: 8.0
