Myrkur Skógur | Flittermice Ov Hell |Zwaertgevegt Records

Release Date: November 12th, 2025
Format: Digital/Cassette
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Netherlands

Myrkur Skógur is a black metal project formed by Sander Pietersen after the long ending of his previous band, F.U.A. Thirteen years of shared history closed abruptly, leaving him questioning whether his musical path had reached its limit. A personal exchange with Gloria Cavalera acted as the spark that pushed him back into creation, reminding him that artistic drive does not simply vanish. Working alone at first, Pietersen shaped the early identity of Myrkur Skógur, later joined by Rens and bassist Stefan Terlouw, completing the line up and solidifying the project’s direction.

“Flittermice Ov Hell” is the debut EP and it reflects a state of inner reset through a cold black metal lens. The material is grounded in traditional forms, drawing from the harsher and more austere side of the genre. The atmosphere stays bleak and inward looking, guided by themes of isolation, endurance, and personal aftermath. The writing favors restraint, keeping the focus narrow and consistent throughout the release.

The EP unfolds with a steady emotional pressure that avoids dramatic shifts. Darkness is presented plainly, without ornamental layers or exaggerated storytelling. There is a persistent bleakness running through the songs, shaped by repetition and steady pacing. The overall impression is somber and reserved, maintaining a uniform temperature rather than chasing peaks or dramatic turns.

Production choices support this approach, keeping the sound raw and grounded. The EP avoids polish and modern shine, staying close to an underground black metal aesthetic. The atmosphere remains cold and distant, reinforcing the personal nature behind the project without becoming self indulgent. Everything presented serves the same emotional space, with no attempts to distract or decorate the core idea.

“Flittermice Ov Hell” stands as a solid first chapter for Myrkur Skógur. It does not chase novelty or grand statements, focusing instead on presenting a clear and honest expression of where the project stands at its beginning. For listeners drawn to traditional black metal with a personal and restrained character, this EP offers a consistent and credible listen.

Score: 7.0
