Formed in
2016, Lord Elephant spent years sharpening their
tusks before dropping “Cosmic Awakening” in 2022. That debut put them on the
map, leading to stage-sharing sessions with heavyweights like Eyehategod and Weedeater.
After tearing up European festivals from Desertfest to Rock In Bourlon, the trio locked themselves in Studio 73 with Riccardo Pasini
in early 2025 to capture their second slab of noise.
If you’re looking for a band to tuck
you in at night, Lord Elephant isn’t it. “Ultra
Soul” is a massive, distorted trip that sounds like it was dragged through the
mud of the 70s and 90s before being dumped into a vat of acid. Leandro Gaccione’s guitar work on tracks like
“Electric Dunes” and “Gigantia” is filthy, layering thick bluesy riffs over a
rhythm section that sounds like a slow-motion car wreck. It’s heavy, it’s
sweaty, and it has enough attitudes to kick a hole through your speakers.
Riccardo Pasini’s
production keeps the edges jagged. There’s no shiny plastic garbage here; the
sound on “Astral Crypt” and “MindNight” is pure, unadulterated fuzz. It’s the
kind of album that makes your floorboards rattle and your neighbors hate you.
The band sounds more connected than ever, playing like they’ve been trapped in
the same smoke-filled room for a decade. By the time “Leave This World With Me”
rolls around, the air is thick enough to choke on.
Lord Elephant is here to
expand their vision and bust out of whatever cages people try to put them in.
“Ultra Soul” is a loud, fuzzy middle finger to anyone who thinks heavy rock has
gone soft. It’s a solid, bruising follow-up that proves these Italians are more
than just a support act. It’s got soul, it’s got dirt, and it’s got enough
volume to shake the dead.
Score: 7.0
