Detroit trio Winds
Of Neptune grew out of pandemic boredom, basement jams and a long chain
of shared history among its three members. What began as a way to stay sane in
2020 turned into a fully formed band with its own identity, shaped by years
spent in projects like Bluesong, The Meatmen, Aquarius
Void and plenty more. Their self titled debut arrives through Small Stone Recordings, recorded at Rustbelt Studios and wrapped in artwork by Bloodworld. It has the spirit of those raw
rehearsal sessions where three musicians rediscovered what makes loud rock fun.
The album
leans into the thick guitar crunch and swagger that made early seventies heavy
rock so addictive. Kevin Roberts keeps the
riffs driving forward while Ross Westerbur’s
bass and vocals tie everything together with a gritty, lived in tone. Mike Alonso’s drumming stays energetic and loose
enough to preserve that basement born spark. Songs like “The Faun’s Rhyme”,
“Gas Giant” and “Temporal Mutant” move with a steady force, never rushed, just
straight ahead rock with plenty of heat in the right places. The two bonus
tracks on the CD and digital formats expand the picture, adding more of the
band’s rough edged personality.
As a debut,
“Winds Of Neptune” introduces a band that knows exactly how to let riffs,
grooves and raw energy take control. The album lands solidly, with enough grit
to please fans of classic heavy rock and enough vigor to keep it from fading
into background noise. It is the sound of three musicians locking in, playing
loud and having a good time with it. Anyone who enjoys straight shooting rock
with muscle will easily climb aboard.
