White Baroness arrives
with a lot of history on their backs, even if this is their first full-length.
The members come from Morgal, Devil Moon, Mutant Sex
Demon, Sigon and more, so their roots
are already tangled in Finland’s loudest corners. The band pulls together the
wild spirit of their past bands, the speed, the cold mania, the violent charm,
and they funnel all of it into “War Chariots”, a debut that rides forward with
no hesitation.
The album
moves with a feverish pulse, sharp swings, rapid attacks and a restless energy
that never drops. The melodic lines cut through the storm in a vivid way,
always dark and frantic, always touched by something theatrical. There is a
strange charm behind the chaos, a sense of black metal possessed by old
European shadows and South American madness. The occasional organ gives the
whole thing a faint whiff of the vampiric, nothing cartoonish, more like a
flicker behind the curtain.
The band
stays tight through the whirlwind. Drums hammer with forward motion, guitars
slice without pausing, vocals screech as if delivered from a balcony in some
cursed city, bass runs beneath everything with a steady pulse. The album’s pace
rarely loosens and the group keep the pressure on through all its tracks,
pushing their attack in circles that spiral higher and higher.
“War
Chariots” is intense, fast, and packed with character. It drinks heavily from
traditions the members already know well, but it has its own twisted flavor.
The music is feral, dramatic, and fired up, and the result is an album that
storms ahead with confidence in its firestorm style. For a debut, it is strong,
loud and fully formed, even if it doesn’t reach the level of something
monumental. It delivers exactly the sort of chaos the band promises, and it
does it with style.
