Portugal’s The
Ominous Circle emerged in 2017 with “Appalling Ascension”, an album that
instantly drew attention for its cavernous sound and occult atmosphere. Then
came silence. Eight years later, the band reappears with “Cloven Tongues Of
Fire”, an album that confirms their commitment to the darker arts of death
metal while expanding the scale and intensity of their vision.
“Cloven
Tongues Of Fire” is a fierce and suffocating return, loaded with massive riffs,
burning energy, and a grim sense of grandeur. The production keeps a natural,
almost primitive tone, allowing the guitars and drums to sound raw, while the
vocals rise from the depths like ancient voices. It’s the sound of a band that
has no compromise but only in summoning the most violent and hypnotic version
of their art.
The Ominous Circle clearly works within a tradition of ancient death metal darkness, and
they shape it with precision and intent. Their music thrives on atmosphere and
intensity, crafting an album that’s like an invocation of death itself. The
mastering by Dan Lowndes enhances the
organic power of the songs, keeping their dirt and venom intact while giving
space for the band’s enormous sound to expand. “Cloven Tongues Of Fire” is a
striking comeback. It’s raw, powerful, and completely unrelenting, unleashing
the kind of storm they want to summon.
