House By The Cemetary returns with their third full
length, and the trio continue to draw heavily from the horror universe that
shaped their identity from day one. Mike Hrubovcak,
Rogga Johansson and Thomas
Ohlsson work again as a tight horror obsessed unit. The album’s concept
moves between classic cult films and grisly real stories, then throws in Hrubovcak’s own twisted creations. The mix creates
a gallery of dangers that match perfectly with the band’s grim persona.
Musically,
the band stay rooted in their blunt and violent style. The production has a
thick body, and the riffs hit with a blunt force that suits the subject matter.
Johansson’s guitar work swings between
violent churn and simple melodies that give the songs some edge without
softening them. Hrubovcak sounds locked in,
his growls shaped around each tale like a narrator stomping through a ruined
mausoleum. Ohlsson keeps everything stomping
forward with a direct drumming approach that keeps the album moving fast.
“Disturbing
The Cenotaph” works as a compact death metal blast packed with blood soaked
storytelling. It is loud, simple, messy and fully dedicated to horror, diving
into violence and sickness with no filter. House By
The Cemetary sound fully in control of their rotten kingdom and deliver
an album that fans of gory, old styled death metal can easily return to. As a
whole, this is their most assertive and entertaining release to date.
