Azketem is the project of Berlin based musician Azken, who has been shaping his own dark
soundworld for several years. With two albums behind him, he has built a
reputation for atmospheric metal that drifts into sorrowful territory. His work
is solitary, personal, and driven by a clear artistic direction. “Amid” arrives
only a short time after the previous album, showing that creativity in this
project moves fast and without hesitation.
“Amid”
pushes Azketem into new territory, while
still keeping the cold emotional core that followers of the project know. The
black metal roots remain present, although they stay in the background. The
more dominant character of the album comes from influences that lean toward
gothic metal and dark rock. Echoes of Type O
Negative, Katatonia, and Fields Of The Nephilim appear through melodic
guitar lines, deeper vocal textures, and a heavier focus on atmosphere. The
result is music that carries sorrow like a steady companion, expressed through
thick layers of sound that build a lonely and hypnotic world.
“Amid” does
not sit comfortably inside a single genre. This is part of its charm. Azken uses whatever sound helps him express his
inner landscapes, and the mix works well. Fans of atmospheric black metal will
recognize familiar shadows, while listeners drawn to gothic metal or darker
rock will also find a home here. It is an album that invites quiet attention,
preferably in solitude, where its emotional pull can unfold fully.
Score: 7.5
