Hailing from Melbourne, Vile Apparition formed in 2017 and quickly cemented their name
in the brutal death metal underground. The band’s 2019 debut, “Depravity
Ordained,” was a savage introduction—an unrelenting barrage of riffs and
horror-soaked lyrics that placed them among the new generation of Australian
extremity. With “Malignity,” their second album, released through Me Saco Un Ojo and Dark
Descent Records, the band continues their campaign of raw sonic butchery
with an even tighter, more venomous approach.
“Malignity”
wastes no time getting straight to the carnage. The guitars hack and twist
through violent rhythmic turns, while the bass snarls underneath like a wounded
beast. Drums strike with almost mechanical precision, but the human element keeps
it from sounding sterile. Vocals erupt in low, swampy roars that could easily
summon images of decaying anatomy. Everything about this album is hostile, from
the sharp riffing to the way the songs end abruptly, like an execution
interrupted mid-swing only to begin again with fresh cruelty.
The
production strikes a fine balance between clarity and grime. Every element
punches through the mix, but it still has that underground rawness essential
for this style. The result is a sound that’s physical and punishing, the kind
of album that could probably strip paint off the walls if played loud enough. “Malignity”
doesn’t try to be smart or pretty; it’s pure, vile satisfaction for anyone
craving death metal that’s precise and revolting. It’s the audio version of
being bludgeoned repeatedly, and somehow, it’s exactly what makes it enjoyable.
Score: 7.5
