Berlin’s Nuclear
Cult is a pack of veterans who’ve been in the trenches of European
hardcore for decades. Formed in 2009 by members of Y,
Solid Decline, and SM70/Pink Flamingos, this band was built from the start
on raw energy, fast tempos, and a refusal to overthink anything. Their sound
grew out of the late 80s hardcore chaos of Infest, Septic
Death, and Heresy, without drifting
into grindcore territory. The band has been active in the underground since
their first demo, which spread quickly through tape trading and zine culture.
After several EPs, splits, and compilation appearances, they now return with
their first full-length “A Beautiful Day...to Go Fuck Yourself,” available
through Armageddon Label in a massive
73-track CD edition that includes their complete discography.
The album
is a barrage of short, violent explosions. Songs burn through in under a
minute, sometimes in under thirty seconds, like sonic flashbangs, each one a
direct shot of hardcore punk attitude. The riffs hit fast, the drums fire like
a machine gun, and the vocals bark with that sharp, half-sarcastic German sneer
that suits the band’s personality perfectly. Everything is delivered with the
kind of speed and precision that only long-running punks can pull off without
collapsing into noise. The production keeps the grit and sweat intact, staying
true to the DIY spirit of their earlier releases.
Lyrically,
“A Beautiful Day...to Go Fuck Yourself” swings between social bite and
self-irony. The titles alone, from “Kleine Ärsche” to “Legalize Den Scheiß” and
“Recht Auf Staat,” have a mix of humor and anger that gives the record a weird
sense of joy through destruction. It’s punk that mocks the absurdity of
everyday life while also reflecting the frustrations of living in modern
Germany. There’s no filter, no poetry, just straight-out explosions of disgust
and laughter.
The
addition of guitarist Chris Leamy (Brain Famine, Siege)
for a few solos injects a bit of extra chaos into the storm, like dropping a
firecracker in an already burning room. His wild bursts of noise fit perfectly
into the mayhem without changing its direction. The
discography edition makes this release something more than a debut, it’s the
entire history of Nuclear Cult in one
brutal, condensed form. It captures their evolution, not through stylistic
change, but through persistence. Every track hammers the same truth: this band
doesn’t slow down. “A Beautiful Day...to Go Fuck Yourself” is pure hardcore
fuel, made by people who live and breathe this stuff. It’s fast, ugly, funny,
and alive in the best way punk can be.
