Archaic Thorn formed in Germany back in 2010 and
have been active in the underground death metal scene ever since. Their path
from the demo "Hydra Throats" to the first full-length
"Eradication" shows a band dedicated to a very specific idea of death
metal, one rooted in the early sounds of the genre. Fans of Degial, Necrovore,
and Repugnant will immediately understand that
this trio is coming from chaotic old days refined through a modern studio lens.
"Malicious
Spears" picks up right where "Eradication" left off. The
production by Christoph Brandes gives the
album a firm punch without sanding down its rough edges. The guitars are dry
and menacing, the bass moves under the mix like a hidden current, and the drums
strike with military precision. There’s no space wasted here, each riff storms
in, does its damage, and vanishes back into the darkness.
"Malicious
Spears" moves with confidence, built on tight interplay between guitar and
drums. There’s an occasional melodic fragment buried beneath the chaos, but
melody never becomes the point. The songwriting is efficient and aggressive,
staying faithful to the spirit of the genre.
This isn’t
an album that surprises, and is direct to strike, to burn, to leave a mark. For
listeners who want death metal in its raw, unfiltered form, Archaic Thorn delivers exactly that. However, for
anyone searching for new directions or unexpected turns, "Malicious
Spears" might come across as a solid but familiar ritual of war and decay.
