Penthos took their name from the spirit of grief and
despair, and since their formation in Athens back in 2017, they have built
their sound around that grim presence. Their self-titled debut appeared in
2022, giving a first glimpse into their vision of black metal. Three years
later, the band has returned with their second album, “Erevos,” released
through Darkness Shall Rise Productions in
multiple formats.
Across its
nine tracks and just over forty minutes, “Erevos” offers a black metal experience
rooted in the traditional Scandinavian approach. Fast tremolo-driven passages
bring to mind the icy riffing of the Finnish scene, while the slower parts
create heavy, ominous surges that echo the mid-paced menace of bands like Carpathian Forest or Tulus.
The production is professional and well-balanced and harsh edged.
Songs such as “Dancing Dead” and “Thanatos” move between galloping speed and stomping rhythm, keeping the listener engaged through constant shifts in pace. “Charon” pulls the listener deeper into the underworld atmosphere, while “Όλεθρος (Olethros)” and “Forlorn Voyage” close the album with a fitting end to the descent. The inclusion of “Lady In Black (Witch II)” shows Penthos reaching into darker, almost ritualistic territory.
What
“Erevos” ultimately delivers is a focused and fully realized black metal album
that remains true to its roots. It is atmospheric, intense, and crafted with
attention to detail, without unnecessary distractions. Penthos
has managed to give us an album that belongs in the classic lineage of
the genre, while dragging their shadow from Athens straight into the abyss.
