From the metal underground of Lisbon comes Elderstag, a project built by musicians who have
already sharpened their craft in bands like The
Chapter, Diabolical Mental State, Fonte, and Voidust.
With this self-titled debut, released in January, the group introduces itself
with confidence, weaving a heavy and sometimes psychedelic approach into a
story-driven album.
The concept
behind “Elderstag” is unusual and striking: a dystopian tale where all humans
are transformed into animals. Across nine tracks, the album moves through
different characters and events tied to that dark universe, making it feel like
more than just a collection of songs. It’s a narrative piece, carried forward
by a mix of heavy riffs, progressive touches, and stoner-driven grooves.
Musically, the album travels between dense, riff-laden passages and calmer, more reflective sections. Songs like “Dehumanized” and “Hell And Back” bring a direct, metallic force, while shorter interludes such as “Forevermore” and “The Cycle” provide space before the journey continues. Tracks like “The Shepherd” and “Vicar Of Nature” lean into longer arrangements, allowing the band to expand on their progressive side and layer atmosphere with forceful drive.
What stands
out most is how the band balances heavy metal traditions with stoner-rock haze
and progressive variety, making the album feel alive and unpredictable. Vocals,
guitars, bass, and drums all serve the story, and the production keeps things
organic, as if the listener is right there with the band.
“Elderstag”
is an ambitious debut that blends storytelling and heavy music into one strange
and compelling ride. It’s not just about riffs or solos, it’s about creating an
entire world through sound, and that’s exactly what the band has done here.
Score: 7.0
