When
speaking of Chilean symphonic metal, one name that consistently resonates is Chaos Magic. Formed in 2015 by vocalist Caterina Nix with the support of former Stratovarius guitarist Timo
Tolkki, the band quickly earned recognition for their combination of
powerful vocals, cinematic arrangements, and melodic depth. Over the past
decade, Chaos Magic has released several
acclaimed albums, establishing Caterina as
one of the most distinctive voices in Latin American metal. Now, to celebrate
ten years of existence, they present “Of Time And Wishes”, an acoustic EP that
offers a different lens on their artistry.
Instead of
the usual symphonic metal grandeur, this release steps into a stripped-down
world where acoustic guitars, piano, and strings create an intimate soundscape.
The result is a collection of reimagined songs from the band’s catalogue,
arranged with a sensitivity that puts the focus on the melodies and lyrics. The
involvement of a full string section—featuring violin, viola, and cello—adds
warmth and elegance, while the guest piano contributions from Maestro Mistheria and Adamo
Sanchez bring extra richness to the arrangements.
Caterina Nix’s voice remains the guiding force throughout. Without the backing of heavy riffs or electronic layers, her vocal lines feel even more expressive, revealing subtle emotions that might have been overshadowed in the original versions. Tracks such as “Seraphim” and “Beware Of Silent Waters” carry a delicate yet powerful presence, balancing melancholy and hope. “Garden Of Winter”, written by Timo Tolkki, flows with graceful piano and string touches, giving it a timeless feel.
The live
cuts, “Furyborn” and “The Impossible”, add another dimension. Recorded in a
more organic environment, they capture the raw energy of Caterina’s performance and the immediacy of the
acoustic setting. These versions underline how well Chaos
Magic’s material translates to a different format—proof that the heart
of the music lies not only in orchestration, but also in strong songwriting.
“Of Time
And Wishes” is not a full-length album, but it serves as a meaningful
anniversary statement. It is reflective, elegant, and deeply personal, offering
a chance for both long-time fans and new listeners to connect with the band in
a fresh way. The EP reinforces the identity Chaos
Magic has been shaping for a decade: symphonic metal that values both
power and emotion, now presented through a softer, more intimate filter.
