Atavistic Decay emerged from Indianapolis in 2023
with the idea of channeling decay as a state of return, stripping existence
back to something primal and suffocating. Their first demo in 2024 hinted at
this approach with raw textures and unnerving atmospherics. Now the band
presents “Immakulate Invokations”, a two-track EP that expands on that vision
across just under fifteen minutes.
The release is split into two distinct halves. “Immaculate Invokations” drags the listener into a cavern of chaotic death metal. The riffs churn and accelerate with frantic energy, while the drumming alternates between blasts and stomping passages that are ritual punishment. Vocals rise from the depths, gurgled and layered, serving as a grotesque chant. The track creates a sense of collapse, like architecture crumbling inward under its own diseased pressure.
“Transcend
The Flesh” flips the dynamic entirely. Here the band moves into dark ambient
territory, abandoning guitars for drones, synth hums, and cavernous echoes. The
atmosphere becomes suffocating in a different way, like drifting through a
crypt filled with stagnant air. It’s less about violence and more about
endurance, an almost funereal meditation that gnaws at the psyche long after
the final tone fades.
What makes this EP striking is the balance of forms. One track is physical destruction, the other psychological corrosion. Together they feel like stages of the same ritual, an invocation and then a transformation. Atavistic Decay sounds committed to this path of extremity, making their work feel less like music in the traditional sense and more like an artifact of something hostile and otherworldly.
“Immakulate
Invokations” is brief, brutal, and uncompromising, the kind of release that
feels like a warning sign of things to come. If the demo hinted at promise,
this EP confirms Atavistic Decay as a force
already stepping firmly into their own space. This one is a strong ritualistic
step forward, showing that Atavistic Decay isn’t
interested in comfort but in dragging underground death metal into ever darker
corners. Their next move will be worth watching for those who like their music
soaked in rot and shadows.
