Formed in 2022 and strengthened with an
additional guitarist in 2024, Copenhagen’s Pustulant
Flesh have already built a name for themselves in the underground with
their rotten, grinding take on death metal. Their style draws from the
putrefied tradition of bands like Blood Duster,
Exhumed, and Carcass,
delivering a live performance that’s as filthy as it is intense. Recorded,
mixed, and mastered by Benjamin “Polle” Radtleff at
Radtleff Recordings, their second (?) EP (or
debut album) “Gurgling Pustulence” captures the group’s stomach-churning energy
in under twenty minutes of pure sonic rot. The press info says it’s an EP but
in metal-archives it is considered full album.
The EP opens with “Beyond Lobotomy” (new
version from the same-title debut EP) and “Cadaver Creation,” both dripping
with chainsaw riffs and guttural growls that feel as if they’ve been dredged
from the bottom of a sewer. Drums blast relentlessly, locking into a
suffocating pace that keeps the pressure constant. “March Of The Ravenous Dead”
leans into a more stomping, lurching attack before erupting into grinding
bursts, giving the track a diseased sense of momentum. “Dødsangst” brings a
burst of violence, short and cutting like a jagged shard of bone.
The sound throughout is raw, grimy, and
oppressive, with the production keeping the filth intact while allowing each
element to pummel with full force. Vocals are deep, guttural, and depraved,
guitars buzz like rusted sawblades, and the drums punch through with a violence
that suits the music’s grotesque subject matter. The pacing of the EP ensures
there is no wasted moment—every track feels like another strike in a relentless
assault.
“Gurgling Pustulence” is a brief but potent
introduction to Pustulant Flesh, capturing
the band’s foul aesthetic and unrelenting attack. It’s a disgusting, relentless
listen that fans of old-school death grind will devour with delight.
