Nemorous
rose from the ashes of Wodensthrone,
a band already known for its windswept English atmosphere and melodic
heaviness. From the beginning, Nemorous pointed
toward a wider landscape, one where heritage black metal ideas met a more open
and exploratory sound. Their first self titled EP hinted at this direction with
swirling guitars, mist covered ambience and a sense of forward motion. Over the
years the line up shifted, bringing in Nick Craggs on
vocals and Rob Hindmarsh on guitar,
transforming the band into a six member unit. This larger formation
strengthened their creative core, giving them the space to shape their first
full length album with patience and care.
“What Remains When Hope Has Failed” has the sensation
of a long journey. Nemorous moves with an
emotional charge that comes through immediately, with guitars that drift
between sorrowful melodies and storm driven aggression. The vocals strike hard
without turning the music into chaos, while the drums keep everything grounded
with an earthy, human pulse. The keyboards add depth in a subtle way, creating
a background layer that supports the album’s atmosphere without crowding the
sound. There is a strong English character running through the entire release,
a cold countryside feeling mixed with the heaviness of old stone and long
memories.
The band use quieter passages as breathing spaces
where the guitars turn soft and reflective, almost mournful, before the tension
returns in a powerful wave. These changes make the album easy to follow, even
during its most intense moments. When the music erupts, Nemorous sounds determined and focused, pushing forward with
impressive unity. The emotional pull remains steady from beginning to end,
giving the album the sensation of a story unfolding, even if no single chapter
dominates the rest.
The title track closes the release in a storm of
running riffs and dramatic shifts, a fitting final climb after the earlier
moments of sorrow, reflection and raw anger. Nothing is wasted here, everything
contributes to an album that carries a strong sense of identity. Nemorous may draw from the past, but the energy
here is entirely their own. “What Remains When Hope Has Failed” is a confident
full length debut, rich in atmosphere and full of life, created by a group of
musicians who clearly poured themselves into the work. It stands as a promising
step for a band that seems ready for much more.
